Environment Day celebrated at MGIMS

On June 5, 2024 – Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sevagram hosted a tree plantation drive at Arogyadham (The Wellness Centre at MGIMS) to reinforce its commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity. Shri PL Tapdiya (President, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. BS Garg (Secretary, Kasturba Health Society), Dr. AK Shukla (Dean, MGIMS), Dr. Poonam Varma (Medical Superintendent, Kasturba Hospital), heads of departments, faculty, staff, and MBBS students were present at the occasion. The event witnessed the enthusiastic participation of staff and students who collectively planted a total of 87 trees on the Arogyadham premises.

The plantation drive featured a variety of tree species, each chosen for their environmental and aesthetic benefits. The species included Amaltaas, Gulmohar, Neem, Mohogany, Kadamb, Karanji, Peltaforam, and Bakul. These trees are known for their vibrant blooms, shade-giving canopy, and ecological contributions, such as improving air quality and supporting local wildlife.

“Our small actions today will have a significant impact on the environment for future generations. By planting these trees, we are taking a step towards a sustainable and healthier planet,” Shri Tapdiya said. “We are planning to add a herbal garden with a diverse array of medicinal plants on Arogyadham premises,” informed Dr. Garg.

Participants, including doctors, students, and volunteers, eagerly took part in the plantation, ensuring that each sapling was properly planted and nurtured. The event also witnessed the inauguration of the newly dug borewell.

Over the years, the institution has undertaken several green initiatives, including waste management programs, water conservation projects, and educational campaigns on environmental issues.
