Our Mission

Guided by the needs of the communities we serve, we aim to deliver an affordable, safe and and evidence-based healthcare in a milieu that blends passion with compassion; to advance that care through novel and ethical research and education; and to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve.

We

Kasturba Hospital at Sevagram has now grown into a nearly 1000- bed teaching hospital. Like all public and teaching hospitals, our hospital is also fairly busy. Take for instance, the health-related events that the hospital generates on a typical Monday. Over a 24-hour period, close to 1700 patients access the outpatient care in the hospital, hospital pharmacies deal with 1800 prescriptions, 140 patients seek admission to the hospital wards, 14 patients undergo major surgeries, 12 babies are delivered, and 20 units of blood are transfused. In addition, 270 patients undergo radiography, 65 ultrasound examinations, 14 computed tomography, and seven patients have a magnetic resonance imaging scan. The laboratories report 750 biochemical tests, 510 complete blood counts, 100 serologic tests, 20 cytology samples and 15 biopsy specimens. A team of a little over 100 consultants, 120 residents, 60 interns, and 250 nurses - all staying on campus- continues its tradition of excellence today. Supported by laboratories known for their quality, and staffed by doctors known for quality of care, patient safety and reputation in central India, our hospital is committed for providing affordable and appropriate care to the population it serves

Teaching Hospital

Kasturba Hospital is a part of MGIMS- an institution consistently being ranked among the top 20 medical schools in the country. This teaching hospital of MGIMS has a privilege of nearly all staff physicians serving on the faculty. Beginning 1969, when MGIMS was founded, Kasturba hospital has been committed to training and mentoring the next generation of international leaders in science and medicine, providing a wealth of opportunities for physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. Close to 2300 doctors have been trained in the hospital, and these talented men and women, in turn, lend fresh and innovative perspective on how to treat and care for patients.

Kasturba hospital also works closely with health care institutions to offer expert treatment and leading-edge clinical trials to patients in their communities. We have partnered with St John Medical College, Bangalore; Indian Council of Medical Research.

Patient - Centered Care

The hospital offers high-quality low-cost sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in every specialty of medicine and surgery. The hospital has a PICU, NICU, MICU, a cath lab, facilities for joint replacement, LASIK, facilities for neurosurgery, and a radiation oncology unit. All biochemical, most haematologic and microbiologic test results are returned within two hours; the radiologic images can be accessed at the point of care. The hospital has recently built a ten-bed intensive coronary care unit (ICCU) that offers affordable, appropriate and accessible cardiac healthcare to people with limited resources. The hospital has several innovative programs to cut the cost of healthcare. The health assurance program enrolls close to a quarter million individuals every year and offers them 50% subsidy on diagnostics, operation and inpatient costs. The low-cost drug initiative started in 2010 has substantially reduced the cost of health care. On an average, our in-hospital pharmacy receives 2000 prescriptions every day- close to half a million prescriptions in 2014. Patients with coronary heart disease, high-cholesterol levels, high-blood pressure and diabetes can have these four disorders treated with five evidence-based drugs (aspirin 75 mg, atorvastatin 10 mg, enalapril 5 mg, amlodipine 5 mg and metformin 1 g) for Rs 145 per month- less than Rs 5 per day. The electronic hospital information system makes it possible to get the right information, at the right time, at the right place, to the right people, in a right format. The entire campus enjoys wireless connectivity. The hospital adopted UpToDate in 2012 to support the focus on quality, safety and innovation in patient care. Since that time, clinicians have come to rely on UpToDate for access to the latest medical information and evidence-based recommendations for screening and treating patients. Our hospital is a part of Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee initiative, run by the Government of Maharashtra, that covers 971 procedures and conditions. Our hospital covers 840 of such procedures and conditions. We offer free-of-cost treatment to the people enrolled by the government in the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee initiative

Quality and Safety

Safety, effectiveness, patient centeredness, timeliness, efficiency and equity – these six tenets are the foundation of our approach to quality and safety. We set high goals and track our progress toward those goals. We ensure we deliver the highest quality and safest care possible.

Reaching Out to the Community

Kasturba Hospital is located in a village and our health professionals are conscious of the fact that our work ought to guided by the felt needs- and unvoiced concerns - of communities we serve. We partner with communities to build, improve and sustain health care delivery and increase the health and well-being of those who live and work and these communities. Several community based screening and diagnostic camps - typically we examine close to 100,000 individuals each year- have improved the value of care. Over the years, we have consistently delivered more integrated, patient-centered care, and have reduced health care costs while improving outcomes.

Our Ophthalmologists reach close to 70,000 individuals each year, and strive to bring eyesight back to anyone who needs it, regardless of his or her ability to pay — and do so with pre- and postoperative care that rivals the highest quality. Kasturba hospital offers an integrated health care delivery system that includes the founding teaching hospital, two rural and an urban community health center and a hospital located 265 km from Sevagram, serving the tribal poor. Our team of obstetrician – gynaecologist, paediatrician, anaesthetist, medical officers, interns, nurses and other paramedics works 24/ 7 to offer preventive, promotive and curative services in the Melghat region of Maharashtra.
